OHNA Meeting Tomorrow Night

The Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association (OHNA) is meeting tomorrow night. There is already a lot of interest in the parking decal proposals. A flyer has been going around the neighborhood (see above image). Here’s a message from OHNA President Todd Woodson:

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Please join us at 7PM on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at St Andrews Parish House, 236 S Laurel St for our monthly Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association meeting. We again welcome Ms. Lynne Lancaster and Mr. Steve Bergin from the City to discuss our residential parking permits.

7PM Meeting called to order

7:05 Richmond Police update- Lt James Roberts

7:10 VCU Police update- Officer Greg Felton

7:15 VCU update- Mr Tito Luna

7:20 Update from Councilman Agelasto’s office- Ms. Amy Robins

7:30 Neighbor Charles Nill has asked to speak on the current stop sign arrangement and request 3 way stops.

7:40 Update on Monroe Park renovations and the unfortunate placement of an electrical box only feet from the WWII Memorial. I will request a resolution from our organization to the Urban Design Committee/Richmond Planning Commission that the City move the box to a more appropriate location. OHNA minutes

One of the things that makes this site different from most of the other local neighborhood/community blogs is it’s relationship to the neighborhood association. I serve as President of the neighborhood association as well as manager/moderator of this blog. At this point, I am certainly willing to step down from one or both positions if replacements are agreed upon.

The topic of minutes is tricky. On one hand, the Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association (OHNA) does want to be transparent and open, on the other hand, its important that neighbors feel free to speak at meetings and that standards are kept. I will try to offer these OHNA meeting minutes on this site whenever I can, however I also think it is important that they be approved by the Association before publication. This may prove difficult if quorum is not reached and the Secretary position remains unfilled. At tonight’s OHNA meeting, the January meeting minutes (taken by acting Secretary Silver Persinger) were approved for publication.

First Saturday Litter Pickup

img_0056-cropped.jpgThe Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association started doing first Saturday workdays about four years ago and OHNA Co-President Josh Irwin has done a great job keeping it alive with the litter pickups. We worked on Belvidere and the Greenway this morning. I hope to see more neighbors volunteering in the future.

TODAY: Byrd House Market, OHNA meeting, 5th District meeting

The Byrd House Market is open from 3:30-7PM. Musical entertainment is an open acoustic jam session, so bring what you play. There will also be an Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association meeting @ 7PM at the William Byrd Community House, and a 5th District meeting with Councilman Marty Jewell @ 6PM at the Sun Trust Riverview Bldg. 1001 Semmes Avenue, James River Conference Room, 1st floor.

1994 DHR letter

Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association members have new information of a 1994 attempt by VCU to acquire/demolish 911 Green Alley and demolish 917 Green Alley, but the EIR was rejected by the DEQ, in large part because the DHR cited the rarity of surviving livery stables in Richmond. It is indisputable that thirteen years later these same livery stables are an even rarer historic resource.

VCU party house problem on Cherry St.

There was a large VCU party on the 300 block of Cherry St. this past weekend, causing complaints of fighting, public urination, public drunkedness, and noise disturbances.

Police were called and there was a report of at least one arrest. VCU officials have been notified and the matter is likely to receive attention at the next meeting of the Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association this coming Tuesday night.
