(Enjoy the event and music, but take a moment to remember the Kanawha Canal. Venture Richmond sent letter in support of its destruction.)
Trash/Recycling Pickup Tomorrow
This Wednesday is a “Red Wednesday”, which means trash and recycling pickup. Ideally, rolling recycling containers are stored and deployed in the back alleys along with trash cans. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night.
If you have not done so already, don’t forget to sign up for your Recycling Perks.
In order to take your recycling to the next level, read this: 10 ways to improve your recycling.
In recycling news, the recycling industry is facing many challenges in trying to incorporate higher amounts of recycled content into packaging materials. In order to help address them, Charlottesville, Virginia-based GreenBlue, the parent nonprofit to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC), How2Recycle and other programs, has selected NSF International, from Ann arbor, Michigan, to facilitate the development of its Recycled Material Standard (RMS). This global standard will help advance adoption of certified material for common packing materials, beginning with plastic.
Also, here’s a quick reminder that the RVA Environment Film Festival is running its annual Virginia Film contest with a $1000.00 grand prize. Please tell your filmmaker friends and family.
Friday Night Movie: Close Encounters
Hopefully, the movie can still be heard over the music from the Folk Festival. These October weekends are jammed packed with events.
Next Week’s OHNA Meeting Will Include A ‘Know Your River’ Workshop
Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association president Todd Woodson sent an email reminder that next week’s OHNA meeting at 7pm on October 22nd at St Andrews Church will primarily consist of a presentation by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay concerning ways we can help waterways and especially our precious James River. The community is welcome to attend.
Congratulations to Trent and Lil’ Sprouts!
This site has mentioned Holly Street neighbor Trent Jackson and his Lil’ Sprouts business before, but this morning, at RealLocalRVA‘s October meeting, he won a semi-finalist position for Help To The Shelf. As part of a partnership with Hatch Kitchen and the Apple Cart Co., Help To The Shelf is an exciting food/beverage pitch competition aimed at helping businesses launch a product and gain recognition with a larger audience. Here’s hoping that Lil’ Sprouts microgreens brings it all home!

5th District Candidate Stephanie Lynch Met With Residents Last Night
Neighbor Ruth Twiggs graciously hosted a candidate-meet-up with Stephanie Lynch, candidate for City Council 5th District, last night at her lovely Pine Street home.
Lynch took questions from the audience, including an important one about VCU. She and other candidates still need to submit their written pledges.
