Beat The Heat

Many people are trying to avoid looking at the big climate change picture, which is absolutely terrifying.

More immediately, in the smaller picture, Virginia is expected to experience a ‘heat dome’ effect this coming week, with increased humidity and temperatures in the upper 90’s.

If you do plan to work outside, make sure you stay extra hydrated and wear the proper attire to avoid any heat-related accidents. Hot weather can increase the risk of heat stroke or a heat-related incident.

People with means will find ways to beat the heat for now – https://hottub.com/cold-tubs/

Yet there are more modest methods to prepare residences.

A study in the U.S. found that across 50 cities, awnings could save up to $200 annually in energy costs per household. Installing awnings above south-facing windows can reduce heat gain by 65%. On east and west-facing windows, awnings can reduce heat gain by up to 77%.

Shade cloth can lower cooling costs by reducing the amount of heat that enters a building. This can be done outside of the building or along the windows, as long as the sunlight is blocked before it enters. This will lead to less energy being consumed for air conditioning in order to make the space comfortable.

This website has extolled energy conservation and energy independence for a very long time, but these matters are taking on new importance as summer heat waves and climate change bear down upon us.

Street Stuff

A couple of street/traffic/parking concerns:

A hole opened up in the 600 block of S. Laurel St. where there had been water utility repairs.

It has been reported to the City and there is a large traffic barrel sitting over it right now.

Also, the City made an announcement concerning upcoming work. From Monday, June 17 to Tuesday, October 29 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., around the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Laurel Street,
contractors will be installing signal poles, traffic signal controllers, countdown pedestrian signal heads, push buttons and other traffic signal equipment. Some lanes of travel will be temporarily closed during this process.

In addition, street cleaning will be taking place next week. Watch for the signs or risk getting towed!

“The Magic Of Belle Island” – Community Movie Night

From announcement:

Join us for Oregon Hill’s Outdoor Movie: The Magic of Belle Isle. Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn, a famous Western novelist whose passion for writing hits an impasse. He takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in picturesque Belle Isle (editor’s note: a fictional lakeside town, not Richmond’s Belle Island), befriending the family next door–an attractive single mom (Virginia Madsen) and her young daughters–who help him find inspiration again.
Free refreshments served: Grilled hotdogs, sides, desserts, and beverages..

Trash/Recycling Pickup Tomorrow Morning

Tomorrow is a “Red Wednesday”, which means trash and recycling pickup.

Please go over what can be recycled.

NOTE: CVWMA (Central Virginia Waste Management Authority) has announced that all curbside recycling must now be INSIDE the CVWMA containers with lid closed. Items beside the container or on top of it will not be collected. In fact, incorrect setouts may not be collected at all. This is new as of July 1 for all our curbside recyclers, with the exception of townhomes/condos still using small bins. (And yes, this also applies to flattened cardboard boxes.)

Ideally, rolling recycling containers are stored and deployed in the back alleys along with trash cans. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night.

If it seems like pickup did not happen, use this online form:

Also, a new recycling facility in Portsmouth, VA, is using A.I.-supported sorters, which will divert more materials from landfill.

Trash/Recycling Pickup Thursday

Normally, this Wednesday would be a “Red Wednesday”, which means trash and recycling pickup, but because of the recent Memorial Day holiday, pickup should instead be on Thursday.

Please go over what can be recycled.

In recycling news, there’s new program in Virginia Beach that hopes to cut down on plastics in the water and give beach toys a new life.
To reduce littered toys local environmental nonprofits partnered with the City of Virginia Beach to launch the Beach Toy Recycling Program at Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
Littered toys contribute to plastic pollution in the ocean, which is harmful to local wildlife.
