Uprisings in Brazil Event at WBCH On Saturday

From the Flying Brick’s website:

3a

We here at the Flying Brick Library are excited to be co-hosting this event with the William Byrd Community House!

When: November 17th, 7pm

Where: The William Byrd Community House, 224 S. Cherry St. in Oregon Hill

The June 2013 Uprisings in Brazil
A presentation by participants

Last summer, Brazil exploded in protests unlike anything in living memory. At the peak, a hundred cities participated in fierce clashes with the authorities; a movement that began with demonstrations against public transit fare increases and became a veritable popular uprising. Yet as the middle class joined in, nationalist
and reactionary narratives muddied the message.

Despite this, the movement succeeded in blocking the fare increases in many cities, demonstrating the effectiveness of new forms of struggle without parties or unions. Autonomous and horizontal groups forced other issues to the surface, including the consequences of the upcoming World Cup and Olympic games in Brazil.

In this presentation, Brazilian anarchists will describe the context from which the events of 2013 emerged, and explain their impact on other ongoing struggles. What conclusions are Brazilians drawing from their experiences, and what can North Americans learn from them?

THIS Tuesday: Farewell to 2013 BHM; Hey There Renegade Market!

From email announcement:

A HUGE thank you
for a fantastic 2013 season at Byrd House Market, and to all our food producer/vendors for all the great work they do to bring you great food wherever you shop it.

In fact, VCU students let the vendors know their appreciation during National Food Day at the Market last week when they visited every one and gave them a Thank You card with a great graphic created from the words collected during a customer survey a few weeks earlier. College students have been swoopin’ in to take advantage of the $10 Student Box (a deal saving them anywhere from 20-30%) provided by participating vendors since first launched at Food Day 2012, but there’s been a real upsurge in their numbers this fall, so as manager, I want to thank them both – students and vendors for their mutual support.

As we head into the holiday season, great gift ideas abound at Byrd House Market… finely grown and crafted foods are always a welcome treat, as well as goodies for your pets and balms for body and soul. Fine goods at great prices! Not sure, ask me!

See you at Byrd House Market!

Launch of the Renegades

Starting Tuesday, November 5th, the BHM Renegade Season begins and runs through April 2014. Our Renegade anchors, The Byrd Farm and Faith Farm Foods, will be joined for the next couple of months by Agriberry, Heath Farm, Phal’s Noodles, Deer Run, Epic Gardens, Tomten Farm, and a few more, so don’t take the market off your schedule! Hours: Tuesdays from 3pm to 6pm (or sunset).

National Food Day Thursday

On Thursday, October 24, National Food Day will be celebrated at the Byrd House farmlet beginning at 3:30 pm. National Food Day serves to promote safer, healthier diets; support sustainable and organic farms; reduce hunger; reform factory farms to protect the environment and farm animals; support fair working conditions for food and farm workers.

The event will feature games, a Pop-Up photography exhibition, and family-style dinner tables hosted by Slow Food RVA, Tricycle Gardens, Farmers Market @ St. Stephens Church, Renew Richmond, Faces of Hope, Shalom Farms with Greater Richmond Coalition for Healthy Children, Open High School, Sub Rosa Breads and William Byrd Community House.

Each organization will provide the framework for conversation for their table and be responsible for recording the issues, solutions, plans and actions discussed. The insights from all the groups will be compiled, distributed to all attendees and made available to the public. While the event is not open to the public, media is invited to attend and engage in conversations with each of the parties.

For more information about this Food Day event, please contact Ana Edwards, Manager, Byrd House Market, 804/517-4049, byrdhousemarket at gmail.com.

Remembering Slavery, Resistance, and Freedom Event Saturday

From the Remembering Slavery, Resistance, and Freedom Project:

October 12, 2013 – Community Conversation on African and African American Resistance to Slavery in Richmond, VA

On Saturday, October 12 from 10 AM – 12:30 PM at the William Byrd Community House, Ana Edwards will lead a presentation on two revolutionary African Americans, Gabriel and Lucy Goode Brooks. Following the presentation, Dr. Michael Blakey will facilitate an open dialogue and discussion. What are the stories of resistance that you know and would like to share? What modes of resistance or key figures would you like to learn more about? What do these histories mean to you?
Following a break for lunch after the discussion, Omilade Janine Bell of Elegba Folklore Society will lead a guided walk of the Trail of Enslaved Africans, beginning at 2:30 PM and ending at 6 PM.

The flyer for the event is available here. Because of space constraints, we ask attendees to RSVP through Facebook, email (remembering@wm.edu), or phone (757-221-7889).

Hopefully, Robert Pleasants and Samuel Parsons will be mentioned.

Is there anything better than good food?
No, but a good intern comes mighty close. Teresa Willoughby is working with BHM from September 2013 through June 2014 – interning with the Library Programs and Byrd House Market at WBCH through St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Grace on the Hill service program. She has a B.S. in Public Health with a particular passion for promoting community health through good nutrition, specifically local, seasonal, fresh foods. If you haven’t met her, she’s the girl taking market stats and learning quickly to be a great market assistant. Say hi and welcome!
