Registration opens TODAY for HandsOn Greater Richmond’s HandsOn Day:

1 Day. 1000 Volunteers. People at the Center of Change.

Imagine how much better Richmond could be if we all spent just 4 hours doing something together for the community. Join one thousand other volunteers across the metro region this October at nearly 60 sites to make a difference in Richmond on one of many organized volunteer opportunities.

There is at least one project in the neighborhood, at the William Byrd Community House, called Growing Our Yard.

The True
We Open 3:30 (not 3)
There’s some confusion because of our policy to allow restaurants and chefs to shop at 3 pm, but vendors do need the time to complete their set-up, as does the Market Info tent with the credit/debit/snap machine. So please restrain your passion for our good foods until 3:30! Thank you.

Good Work
Open Door Resource Center
ODRC serves “those who have served our country in the armed forces, those currently serving, and their families. We assist our clients by providing services to the homeless, assisting clients with healthcare, education, Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, and promoting self-sufficiency.”
Virginia Chapter Sierra Club
Sharing information about The People’s Climate March in New York City on September 21. “The People’s Climate March–held just days before the United Nations Climate Summit–is an unparalleled opportunity to let our world leaders know how urgently the public is calling for solutions to climate disruption, and how we need to move quickly from dirty fuels to clean energy.”
Good Practice
Please Park on the Soccer Field
It’s on the street, along Idlewood Avenue, certainly, but there’s MUCH MORE parking available on the Soccer Field. The walk is short and partly shady. AND at the end of S. Linden St. there is an area designated for handicapped shoppers and quick pick-ups.
You can make this!

Did you know it is National Blueberry Month? Check out all this good info on Blueberries – recipes, activities, health benefits…

What you can pick up and make quick for supper tonight?
Snack on the cool fruits of summer – blueberries, blackberries, carrots, cucumbers, melons, cherry or sungold tomatoes – just rinse, chop and chomp.
Cool corn and sweet red pepper salad, garnished with dill, ground pepper.
Time for a homemade minestrone (filled with all the bounty of summer veggies) or chilled potato leek soup.
Tempest tossed salad of tender greens with cantaloupe chunks and sizzling sausage slices. Squeeze a little orange over it and and black pepper.
Never quite sure how to use herbs or spices (or both!?!). This site has great ideas and actual information…
——————————————————————————

Green beans, Zuchini, Acorn and Summer squash, Red potatoes … sounds like a roast to me!
Mugsy’s Dogtown Lounge makes Chicken Fingers, Duck Feet, and Gizzards and Chicken Salad for Dogs and Cats! Stop by the red tent today!

VOLUNTEERS & INTERNS
We have had a great team of them this summer, and sadly most will be saying “seeya” in another week. So, when you see these fine folks, please say thanks:
Andrew Talbot, Lizzie Gonzalez, Michelle Saiyid, and Lauren Taylor!

In addition, WBCH’s Associate Board has been providing a pair of volunteers for breakdown each week since the market’s opening day in May! Thank You, ABOG and Robin for coordinating this effort.

“Meet Me in the Bottom” Tonight At WBCH

From Style listing:

The Defenders of Freedom and Justice and Equality show the award-winning, 40-minute documentary, “Meet Me in the Bottom: the Struggle to Reclaim Richmond’s African Burial Ground,” on Wednesday, July 16, at William Byrd Community House. Directed by Shawn Utsey, the film chronicles the contentious fight between community activists, VCU and Gov. Bob McDonnell for control of the land. (He signed a bill to transfer the property from VCU to the city of Richmond in 2011.) The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. and is followed by discussion. Free, with donations accepted.
