2015 is shaping up to be a great market season

WELCOME TO OUR NEW AND RETURNING VENDORS, MUSICIANS, NONPROFITS, STORYTELLERS, FRIENDS, SHOPPERS AND VOLUNTEERS!
I am looking forward to the bounties of spring like everyone else. Eggs with clear whites and golden yolks, Asparagus tender and tall, Salad greens and sprouts tossed with the lightest of vinaigrettes, Strawberries and herbs, flowers and soft yet hearty warm breads, mushrooms bursting with savory good tones sauteed in whole butter or olive oil with chopped garlic, a dash of salt and sprinkled with chives… and make one more stew, a big one-pot treasure of the farmer’s best crops and high quality meat or poultry that feeds four for 3 meals. It is all about the food, isn’t it.

MAY 5 = OPENING DAY!

AND EVERY RENEGADE MARKET DAY TIL THEN IS THE BEST KIND OF PREVIEW!

Please Don’t Forget, Vendor Applicants!!

326 S. Pine Street

A house that has since been demolished, 326 S. Pine St., was at the location of the Pine St. Baptist Church parking lot on the 300 block of Pine Street. In the first photo, it’s the sliver of a house that is just to the left of the corner pharmacy storefront, which is now Pine Street Barbershop. The overall photo is a panoramic photo of Oregon Hill residents in front of Pine Street Baptist Church, that is currently hung in the William Byrd Community House. As it turns out, the late Senator Benedetti on March 28, 1929 was born at 326 S. Pine St. His father, Carl Vincent Benedetti appears in the city directories at that address from 1926 to 1933. The Senator died last November.

OHNA Meets Tonight

The Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association is meeting tonight (as usual, fourth Tuesday of month) at 7 pm at the William Byrd Community House.

Because last month’s meeting was cancelled, the agenda is very full.

A few points-

The American Civil War Museum at Tredegar will attend to discuss repairs to their historic site’s structures. Attending will be Patrick Saylor, Director, Marketing and PR; Christie Ann Bieber, Director of Strategic Initiatives; and Andrew Phinney, Facilities Manager, to discuss “some work that will be taking place at Historic Tredegar during the next few months. Specifically, we will be doing badly needed repair and restoration work on the canal wall at the back of the Tredegar site. The project is set to begin Feb. 23, with the removal of trees and vegetation along the wall.”

Emily Francis, a candidate for the 10th district Senate race, will be attending. “I’m running for state senate in the 10th District and was hoping to speak with you about the race before your neighborhood association meeting tomorrow”

From Rev. S. Abbott Bailey, Members of “St. Andrew’s and the Grace-on-the-Hill Residents are planning a storm-drain marking project in Oregon Hill to raise awareness about water quality, which is particularly important given our proximity to the James River.

The Tredegar Green issue was rescheduled for the March meeting.

OHNA Meeting Next Tuesday

From email:

Hello all

OHNA’s monthly meeting is Tuesday, January 27th at 7 pm at WBCH (William Byrd Community House).

Jack Berry, from Venture Richmond, will be at the meeting to discuss the proposed rezoning of the amphitheater below Oregon Hill to allow more events. This issue could potentially have a huge impact on the neighborhood in terms of more amplified noise, crowds, parking congestion, and public drinking. If you wish to have your voice heard on this issue, this IS the meeting to attend.

Also attending the meeting will be City Planning Director Mark Olinger, and City Councilman Parker Agelasto.

Thanks
Jennifer Hancock

What’s next for Byrd House Market in 2015?

What’s next for Oregon Hill, you might ask. A long-awaited major change to the roadways of the neighborhood will begin this year. The Idlewood Avenue/Grayland Avenue/I-195 Roundabout will be constructed and include improvements to the sidewalks from S. Cherry St. to Harrison St. The roundabout also facilitates Idlewood Avenue becoming a 2-way street. This will alter traffic dramatically, acknowledges that Idlewood Avenue is a major throughfare for people traveling from the near West End to Downtown businesses, and should make it easier for everyone to find Byrd House Market by car, bike and foot. If you want to see what city officials are working with, click here. We don’t have a start date yet, but it could be this spring, which means we will be working closely with the contractor and city liaisons to ensure as little encumbrance on market days as possible. It would help if the city were to hear from you about this. Parker Agelasto is our representative council member on the project, so don’t hesitate to write him: parker.agelasto@richmondgov.com!
