Exhibit Of Photo Portraits of WWII Veterans Opens At Virginia War Memorial

From Virginia War Memorial press release:

An exhibit of photo portraits of 14 veterans of World War II originally published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch will be unveiled on October 5 at the Virginia War Memorial.
The black-and-white photos were taken in July and August by Times-Dispatch photographer Dean Hoffmeyer and published August 15, 2015 in a special section of the newspaper commemorating the 70th Anniversary of V-J (“Victory Over Japan’) Day – the day World War II ended.
The subjects of the portraits, who range in age from 88-96 years, served in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces – Army, Army Air Corps, Marines and Navy – and in both the European and Pacific Theaters during the war. All are residents of the Richmond and Petersburg metropolitan areas.
Hoffmeyer photographed each veteran individually using a vintage 4×5 format Speed Graphic film camera – the type of camera used by many newspaper photographers in the 1940s- and developed each photo by hand.
“When an original digital image is gone, it is lost forever,” Hoffmeyer said. “I wanted our portraits to be everlasting and real, just as the contributions these men made to our country are everlasting and real.”

The photos will be on display in the American Legion Exhibit Hall in the Virginia War Memorial’s Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center at 621 South Belvidere in downtown Richmond through November 30.

Photos From War Memorial Ceremony Today

Neighbor Charles Pool attended the special memorial ceremony today at the Va. War Memorial in honor of September 11th. It was a very moving celebration with a brass band, youth chorus, and guest speakers. He took these photos:

The magnificent setting of the War Memorial might be altered in the future if Venture Richmond receives a DCC rezoning for Tredegar Green that would allow them to build by right to 95 feet in height.

Venture Richmond And Local Media Ignoring Concerns On Amphitheater Rezoning

Last week, there was a Richmond Symphony stage put up on Tredegar Green to “test the site”. There was no notification to the neighborhood and several neighbors did ask about it. The stage was taken down and it appears that the actual event will occur on Brown’s Island. (Did it violate the “four day rule”?) However, to put it politely, this seems a bit premature and it would have helped to have a courtesy heads-up from Venture Richmond staff while they are supposedly working with the Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association to rezone the Tredegar Green property.

In fact, it appears that Venture Richmond is once again arrogantly and deliberately planning to ignore community concerns. A quick look at latest submissions to the City Planning office confirms that Venture Richmond’s plan appears to fall far short of the neighborhood association’s proposal. (It’s also important to recall that there is no “Tredegar Green” amphitheater in the City’s Riverfront Plan.)

For example, the section on “Building Restriction”: instead of a limitation stating that no permanent structures would be built, Venture Richmond is proposing that only structures on the City-owned portion of the property would be reviewed by the Urban Design Committee and Planning Commission (while buildings up to 95 feet in height could be built on the Venture Richmond-owned land by right!)

Below is a photo today of the grand view from the terrace of the Virginia War Memorial. This is certainly one of the most important viewsheds in Richmond.

Also below is quick photoshop illustrating how this view would be impacted if a building 95 feet in height were built on Tredegar Green, as permitted by the DCC zoning proposed by Venture Richmond. This is a view that should be protected by a restriction on any permanent structures in Tredegar Green, as the neighborhood association has proposed.

Will there be any un-biased media coverage going forward? Oregon Hill neighbors fear that Folk Festival coverage will once again be used to drown out community voices and promises will once again be dishonorably broken. The Times Dispatch, Richmond Free Press, along with other local media outlets are corporate ‘partners’ of Venture Richmond. Who represents the regular citizens on Venture Richmond’s board? This week Style magazine published its 2015 Power List issue with Venture Richmond’s Jack Berry and no mention of his Shockoe stadium campaign or the destruction of the Tredegar wall or Kanawha Canal. No mention of why so many citizens have knicknamed Venture Richmond as “Vulture Richmond”. No mention of the lobbying, tax exemptions, and no-bid lease arrangements. With Venture Richmond increasing ties to WRIR, it looks like they will have all the local media locked up. I remember when former Oregon Hill resident Chris Maxwell and I were excited about creating a community radio station that eschewed corporate donations and influence. Sadly, for many Oregon Hill residents who have supported that WRIR vision over the years, it has been compromised and corrupted.

Despite Style’s Power rhetoric, are “RVA”‘s political winds REALLY on the verge of shifting?

Silent Memorial Day Run

From the Richmond.com article:

For the third year, the Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department will host a silent run in honor of Memorial Day put on by veteran and officer Stephen Adt.
The 5K from the Stuart C. Siegel Center to the Virginia War Memorial serves as a somber reminder that the holiday is more than the beginning of summer or an opportunity for discounts at the mall.

“This is my way of kind of changing that,” Adt said.
The first year attracted more than 200 runners and Adt said he hopes the idea will gain traction in other cities to remember military men and women killed in war. Each year, a combat veteran leads the run carrying the American flag.

What: The third annual 5K run in silence to memorialize military men and women killed in war. Runners are asked to wear white shirts.
When: Monday, May 25 rain or shine; 10 a.m. registration, 11 a.m. guest speakers and light stretching, noon run, short ceremony and flag presentation after the run.
Where: Starts at VCU Stuart C. Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St. and ends at Virginia War Memorial, 621 S. Belvidere St.
Cost: Free

USO-style Show at War Memorial This Evening

From Times Dispatch article:

With a Bob Hope impersonator and an Andrews Sisters-style duo, the Virginia War Memorial will be home to a show Wednesday reminiscent of USO shows from the 1940s.
The show, which costs $25, will be at 6:30 p.m. at the memorial’s amphitheater. Jeb Hockman, a War Memorial spokesman, said a limited number of tickets are available and can be bought at the door.

VWM 5K This Saturday

The Virginia War Memorial 5K Run/Walk To Remember will be Saturday, April 18th. The race kicks off at the Memorial @ 8:30 a.m. and will be travelling through Oregon Hill between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Organizers are expecting 500+ participants and over 600 military running in formation. There will be Course Marshals and Fort Lee soldiers along the route and at each corner. Richmond City Police will be involved with the race too. Only 2nd street and Belvidere from Byrd Street to the Lee Bridge entrance ramp will be closed, but due to the number of participants there might be a few delays on the streets involved.

This race is a wonderful opportunity for the public to honor and remember veterans.
