The term “dead bikes” describes what people seen when a bicycle frame is left chained to a bike rack for months on end or a vandalized bike with tires smashed and mangled is left to rot locked to a pole along a sidewalk. It is bicycle blight and can take up valuable walking space and clutters up the already small amount of proper bike parking spaces in Richmond.
How can you tell when a bike is dead? Do you report it to the police? Can the bike owner be ticketed? How can one get a bike removed? It isn’t easy and can be very confusing, right?

China Street Trolley Tracks
As the repair crew worked on the China Street water pipe issues yesterday, Richmond’s old trolley tracks became visible once again.
This reminds me, I am hoping to hear more soon about the new City Council plans for GRTC.
New Parking Meters On W. Cary and Main

Didn’t know if you’ve seen them yet, but there are now central pay to park kiosks on the 900 blocks, both sides, of main and Cary streets. They sure snuck those in over Christmas break. Students have never had to pay before. Will this drive vcu commuters deeper into Oregon Hill and shouldn’t the revenue benefit our neighborhood?
Of course, a more positive outlook might be that these new parking fees will finally drive VCU students out of their cars altogether, which is something that the City’s former director of the Department of Planning and Development Review, Rachel Flynn, often suggested as a goal in order to relieve overall congestion and pollution.

New Bumps for New Road
Contractors are installing asphalt bumps in four locations down the hill to divert water into the drain culverts. Hopefully these bumps are a work in progress because in their current form, they will certainly cause serious injury to any bicyclist trying to go down the hill.

A neighbor, impressed by the 1960’s photographs found at the Library of Virginia, took the liberty of stitching 5 of the photos together to make one panoramic view. This shows the canal (with water!) and the full length of the Tredegar wall, a portion of which was demolished by NewMarket a year ago, and another portion on city property that was illegally demolished recently.
