Abusing The New Idlewood Roundabout

From a neighbor:

About 5:20 pm yesterday, right as VCU closed, I saw a line of cars across the newly seeded park property, making their own street from parking on Grayland to exiting onto Idlewood by the roundabout. They had moved the barriers and destroyed the beautiful newly fixed up sod. They were even using the turnaround area for parking! So tired of the neighborhood getting crapped on by VCU commuters/free parkers. More substantial barriers should go up this week and the long term plan is to place big rocks there as a barrier to block them from entering. I so wish we could have closed Grayland. Since this is park property, maybe we should name it and figure a use for it…

Issues With Grayland

While many neighbors are enjoying the new roundabout, some are also monitoring problems that stem from Grayland Avenue being partly open for parking. The people who are still using Grayland have abused the privilege by leaving litter and dangerously driving over part of the closed, roundabout section. The City’s Department of Public Works put up some black plastic fencing to try to discourage the misbehavior, but now people are just driving around it. Some neighbors are saying they predicted this and are re-iterating their calls for this section of Grayland Avenue’s street to be removed and fully closed as soon as possible.

Going West…

Other neighbors beat me to this, but many are enjoying the novelty of turning west off S. Cherry onto Idlewood now that it is two-way again and with the new Idlewood Roundabout(!):

I invites others to suggest a soundtrack for the video, but click here for my favorite.

And just to give a complete experience, here is another video coming off the Expressway:

It’s something we have waited many years for, so please excuse the giddiness.

Thanks to all the people who made this happen, past and present officials, most notably, Councilperson Parker Agelasto.

In the meantime the City sent out this press release:

In addition, as related by neighborhood association president Todd Woodson:

The following message was just received from the location manager of the Showtime TV series Homeland:

“The 2nd Street downtown exit off the Lee Bridge and S 2nd Street between S Pine and Spring St will be closed next Monday, Feb 5th from 4am until about 2pm.The bike path going underneath the Lee bridge from Oregon Hill will remain open.”

A bit cryptic with the 2nd street location between Pine and Spring but you get the gist. The show must go on!

Thanks, Todd.
