UCI Bike Events
Folks,
As the aircraft buzz overhead, you may or may not be aware that there has been some debate and controversy regarding the lack of crowds for the Richmond 2015 UCI bike race.
Without getting too far into it, let me just say that while I have been very critical of City projects and chasing tourist dollars, you notice that I have not taken aim at Richmond2015 as much because I am hoping it will lead to better bicycle infrastuctrure and culture in the long term.
Regardless, now is a good time to get out there and enjoy this international event.
Neighborhood restaurant Dinamo has a big welcome:

Also, neighbor Holt Edmunds asked me to make sure people know about this freebie Thursday night, which is for anyone volunteering for the races or biking to the Poe Museum.
He volunteers at the museum and says the bike race has hurt visitation (a bit counter-intuitive). He hopes fellow Oregon Hill residents might want to take advantage of this.
Thanks,
Scott

Banner for Race At Main Street Library
From Main Street librarian Patty Parks:
We are creating a “Welcome the World” banner pop-up event at the Main Library on [FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18 ] from 9-4 at 101 E. Franklin Street and 2nd Street.
Although the Main Library will be closed during the Richmond Bike2015, our spirit is with the race, the city and the world that will be watching our spectacular event.
To be proactive and to show our solidarity with the city and race, we would like to accessorize our 2nd Street wall (stretching almost the whole block from Main to Franklin) with banners from organizations that are not on the race course. The bicyclists will be taking this 2nd Street route from Main to Broad, and this will give everyone an opportunity to welcome our visitors and show off our community support.
If you would like to put a banner up on our wall, we will be attaching them on Friday, September 19th. Join us! We will attach your banner with double-sided tape; you can remove it on Monday, Sept. 28.
Let’s make this a Welcome Wall to mark this epic event.
Join up and find out more on the FaceBook event page.

UCI Bicycle Race Leaves Monroe Park In The Dust
Some choice excerpts from the Times Dispatch article:
Monroe Park will not host a designated fan zone during the UCI 2015 Road World Championships despite plans to the contrary and tens of thousands of dollars in city expense to improve the space.
A sponsor that loosely agreed to underwrite the celebration space in the Fan District switched gears in recent weeks, according to officials with Richmond 2015, the organization putting on the event. The group declined to name the sponsor but said it had shifted to another space along the course. Officials would not detail costs associated with sponsoring a zone at the park. The move did not affect fundraising, they said.

Todd Woodson, who lives in neighboring Oregon Hill, said the city had squandered taxpayers’ money.
“We’re in a crisis of leadership in this city and we’re hemorrhaging money,” Woodson said.
About 300 feet of a water line along Franklin Street was damaged during work done this spring, officials said at the time. How much the damage cost was unclear Monday. City officials were not able to provide an estimate.
