VCU’s Paint The Town Green on Saturday

Virginia Commonwealth University Student Government Association is sponsoring another Paint The Town Green event for this Saturday, March 26, similar to last year’s.

I could not find anything on the regular VCU site, but I did find this announcement on the alumni site:

The Rams Alumni Volunteer Network was formed last year to provide an outlet for Richmond-area alumni to collectively serve as community-service volunteers on behalf of the VCU Alumni Association and the MCV Alumni Association.

RAVN will assist the VCU Student Government Association’s Paint the Town Green project on March 26. Paint the Town Green is a SGA initiative to gather volunteers to help clean up various neighborhoods in the VCU vicinity, including the Fan, Carver, Oregon Hill and Randolph.

On April 2, RAVN members will volunteer at the Monument Avenue 10K. Our alumni will staff water station at the beginning of the race starting at 8 a.m.

Volunteers are need for both activities.
For more information about how you can get involved with RAVN or serve as a volunteer, contact Morgan McDowell (B.S.’09/H&S), director of student and young alumni engagement, at (804) 828-8191.

I will update further as more information becomes available (or maybe someone can help out by leaving a comment).

Open High School senior named Boys & Girls Clubs’ Youth of the Year

From Richmond Public Schools press release:

Beersheba Pointer, a senior at Richmond’s Open High School, has been named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond’s 2011 Youth of the Year.
Pointer, who plans to attend the College of William and Mary and major in business administration next fall, received her award and a $15,000 scholarship at the organization’s 10th Annual Distinguished Leadership Awards Dinner held last month.

Congratulations, Beersheba!

Sacred Spaces in Oregon Hill

The Commonwealth Society, part of VCU’s Special Programs, offers opportunities to meet new people, explore new subjects, enjoy field trips and much more.

Coming up on their Spring 2011 schedule is “Sacred Spaces in Oregon Hill” (click any preceding text for website):

Wednesdays, April 27 to May 25
9 to 11 a.m.

Oregon Hill Historic District is a fine 19th- and early-20th-century working-class neighborhood with architecture and streetscapes that illustrate how industrial workers lived. Access to the James River and Kanawha Canal and the industries that were growing along these waterways furthered and expanded the growth of the population in the area. Through lectures and walking tours, we will look at the history of this Richmond neighborhood and examine such landmarks as Hollywood Cemetery, St. Andrews and Pine Street churches and the Virginia War Memorial.

Instructor: Edwin Slipek Jr., an architectural historian and architecture critic for Style Weekly, teaches at VCU and Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies.

I don’t know if if this class is full yet, but for more information, you can call (804) 828-3635 or e-mail psworley at vcu.edu.

VCU’s “Qatar Day in RIchmond”

Virginia Commonwealth University is hosting a “VCU Qatar Day in Richmond” starting at 11 am today in the VCU Commons Plaza.

Qatar is an Arab Middle Eastern emerite that has a VCU satellite campus.

I am not sure if it is really open to non-students, but it will “involve students from Qatar hosting a series of activities on the Plaza for Richmond VCU students to experience. There will be food, a live camel, henna tattoos among other fun and exciting activities.”

Hopefully this is a good precursor to the VCU Intercultural Festival. Regardless, they picked a beautiful day for it. Don’t spook the camel.
