A SPECIAL DINNER AT MAMMA ‘ZU TO SUPPORT A LOCAL COMMUNITY NON PROFIT
Join William Byrd Community House for a Special Evening of Food and Support
Ed Vasaio, the owner of Mamma ‘Zu, is preparing a special menu for William Byrd Community House’s dinner held at his restaurant on Sunday, August 7 at 5:30 pm. Mamma ‘Zu, a favorite Oregon Hill restaurant, is known around town for their delicious and sometimes unique version of authentic Italian food. The dinner will support the local non-profit which helps the working poor of inner city Richmond.
It will be a wonderful evening of fun and food all while supporting a great cause. Founded in 1923, William Byrd Community House provides families of Richmond’s inner-city neighborhoods with a full range of prevention-oriented, community-based programs to empower the individual, strengthen the family, and enhance city neighborhoods. William Byrd Community House gives the working poor access to services for their most pressing needs in five key program areas, Early Childhood Education, School Age program, Youth and Young Adult Services, Grace Arents Library and Education Center and Emergency Family Services. The mission of WBCH is to help people transform their lives and build self-sufficiency.

Tickets for this event will be $75.00 per person (not including alcohol or gratuity) and will be available through the William Byrd Community House Finance office. Call (804) 643-2717 for more information or check out our website at www.wbch.org.

Oregon Hill T-Shirts

I have posted Oregon Hill t-shirts before, but I thought I would bring some attention to more recent fashion forays-

I still have a Mamma Zu’s t-shirt, and now Pescados China Street is hosting a t-shirt design contest.

“pescados china street t shirt design contest” ~ we are having a t shirt design contest for our restaurant t shirt ~ seeking something cool, fresh, maybe caribbean inspired or fishy, but certainly unique. all things considered ~ if your design is the winner & used on our shirts, you score a $500 pescados china street gift card ~ winner must provide camera ready artwork ~ bob@pescadoschinstreet.com

I will also remind you that the Oregon Hill Zazzle online store features all types of apparel, and due to material cost increases, prices may go up this next week, so order now. Take advantage of their sale.

Pescados fundraiser for Connor’s Heroes

from the event’s FaceBook page:

Lunch from 11:30 – 2:00
Dinner from 5:00 – closing

Pescados China Street will be donating fifteen per cent (15%) of the day’s take on June 27th to “Team Pain Cave” (John Hauserman, Danny Royce and Travis Deckert) to help fundraising efforts for Connor’s Heroes Foundation (www.connorsheroes.com). Come out for lunch or dinner (or both!!) and support the cause. The more that come out to eat and drink throughout the day, the more we can raise!

Connor’s Heroes Foundation is a group of volunteers, parents of children with cancer, and other caring individuals and companies who want to conquer childhood cancer through direct assistance, awareness, and research. They strive to help others be heroes in the lives of children with cancer and their families. Currently, they provide assistance to children and their families who are being treated for cancer in Richmond, Virginia at the Children’s Medical Center of VCU Health System, including the ASK Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic and the VCU Massey Cancer Center Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.

With your support on June 27th, you can join us in the “pain cave” as we train for Ironman Louisville and log mega-miles of swimming, biking and running for this great cause. Your support for this wonderful organization will make training all the more meaningful for us and most importantly, will make a difference in the lives of many families dealing with childhood cancer.

We still have a long way to go with fundraising efforts…please forward this to all your friends and family! We look forward to seeing you on June 27th!

Again, Congratulations to Mamma ‘Zu and Pescados

Mamma ‘Zu wins Style’s Best of Richmond Readers’ Pick for Best Italian Restaurant.

From the article:

This ain’t no red sauce joint, and pizza is not listed on the blackboard. Mamma ‘Zu charms the purist looking for a taste of real Italy with classic preparations and ultrafresh ingredients. Some diners claim to abhor this strange little place, but its list of devotees is way longer.

Also, note that Pescados won for Readers’ Pick Best Local Seafood.

Pescados Benefits ROSMY and Plans Brunch Service

Pescados China Street, the City’s ‘Best New Restaurant’, continues to benefit local charities on Mondays. This Monday (April 18), ROSMY will receive 15% of the day’s take from Pescados China Street, on Monday April 18th, either lunch 11:30- 2:00 or dinner from 5:00 until closing. ROSMY has been ensuring Virginia’s sexual minority youth an equal opportunity for success since 1991.

Also, I am hearing rumors of Sunday brunch starting in May.

821 Cafe Wins Best Burger Poll

Congratulations to 821 Cafe for winning Richmond.com’s ‘Best Burger Poll’.

“We took over the restaurant seven years ago,” owner Andrew Clarke says, “and really ‘beefed up’ the menu, so to speak.”

Co-owners Chip Cooke and Andrew Clarke introduced a variety of ½-pound and full-pound juicy burgers to the menu and topped them with everything from fried onions and portobello mushrooms to bacon and chili.

They also do a lot of burger specials, like the Volcano Burger stuffed with fresh mozzarella, fried jalapeños and buffalo sauce or the Texas burger with BBQ sauce and whiskey fried onions.

821’s burgers run $6.25 to $9. Or you can even go for a “Man vs. Food” type challenge with the Brent Burger – a whopping one-pound patty sandwiched between two grilled sandwiches for $12.

821 also makes their burgers extra affordable with $2 quarter-pound burgers every Monday night. How’s that for a deal?

The most popular burger, according to Andrew, is the Union Burger ($8.50) topped with bacon, portobello mushrooms and fried onions. Or the Veggie Burger with bacon (yes, odd combo, but apparently quite popular), provolone cheese and avocado.
