Two new Pescados reviews-

From Blog Richmond, Va.:

Pescados China Street is Fresh and Fabulous

From Historic Richmond Inns:

Pescados China Street Bistro

From Art 180:

Whatcha doing to celebrate your sweetie–or yourself–next week? You don’t really want to dine at an overcrowded restaurant Tuesday night, now do you?? How about celebrating with ART 180 a day early, on Monday, the 13th? Pescados China Street (that’s the Oregon Hill location) is showing a little love themselves and donating a percentage of sales to ART 180, a local non profit that provides after-school programs in creative expression to children living in challenging circumstances, giving them a voice through art! So grab a couple of coworkers or guy/gal pals for a lovely lunch, or take your honey or your best friend or your buddy to dinner. You’ll surely enjoy Pescados’ creative, seafood-oriented mix of Caribbean and Latin flavors, with fish that arrive daily. ART 180 will receive part of the proceeds from lunch, dinner, and even gift certificate or T-shirt purchases.

If you just can’t make it this Monday, you’ll have a second chance on February 27. That’s right, Pescados’ heart is double-wide, and they’re hosting TWO charity nights for ART 180. So show them, and yourself, a little love by eating and drinking to your heart’s content. Stop by 626 China Street for lunch 11:30-2 or dinner 5-10 p.m. Visit their website to preview the menu, but make sure to check out the specials when you’re there.

VCU IHOP Express Adds Security

According to a story in the VCU student newspaper, the Commonwealth Times, security has been tightened at the new IHOP Express restaurant.

After a fight that attracted the attention of six police cars on Jan. 20 in the IHOP Express at Laurel and Grace Place, Dining Services’ recent decision to check student IDs might make more sense to students.
In last Tuesday’s TelegRAM, VCU announced that the IHOP Express will be increasing security on Friday, Saturday and Sunday after 1 a.m, when they stop taking swipes.
VCU students will be asked to show their ID in order to access the dining facility. They are allowed to have a maximum of three guests.

The eatery was opened this past year as part of new Grace Street parking deck construction.

In more positive news, students can use the Cabell library more as open hours have increased, and there is a student petition that asks the VCU administration to focus more on student needs and less on construction and expansion of the Monroe campus. (ed.- No surprise here).

Mamma ‘Zu in Saveur

From the short article:

In this year’s SAVEUR 100, we take stock of our favorite things: recipes, people, places. We consider every last one a new classic.
By The Editors…

We didn’t expect to find honest-to-god Italian food in Richmond, Virginia. But among the low-slung buildings in the Oregon Hill neighborhood, we discovered Mamma ‘Zu. Ed Vasaio’s candlelit restaurant is part trattoria, part neighborhood clubhouse. And the food! Penne all’amatriciana. Garlicky dandelion greens. Bold, bright antipasti like roasted red peppers with anchovies served in huge family-style portions. A hit when it opened in 1993, it’s now a legend.

Also includes a recipe for roasted red pepper and anchovies.

Pescados Schedule and Mamma Zu soccer

From Pesacados Facebook page:

PESCADOS CHINA STREET is closed for the holiday today, Monday December 26th, and will re-open Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. for lunch as usual.

Don’t forget to call and make reservations for NYE 2011, seats are going fast. Happy Holidays to all of our friends!

As for Mamma Zu, I am not sure of their holiday schedule, but congratulations to their sponsored soccer club, which is moving up a division:

It was a successful season. I had 3 goals this season and we accomplished at least one of them. Winning the championship was a goal distance from us. It was a well played game and it was exciting for both teams. Cosmin came through with a great goal and Paul gets the assist. We will have to settle for a 1-1 tie and second place in Div 4.

Good news is we will be promoted. It was the goal that we had to get to 3rd division.

VCU Composts!

The Virginia Commonwealth University student newspaper Commonwealth Times has a very positive story this week on the school’s efforts to compost.

VCU’s Dining Services has introduced a new composting program to reduce waste output out of Market-810 as part of VCU’s larger green initiative.
At the end of September, VCU had diverted 11,365 pounds of waste from going to a landfill by sending its organic waste to a compost pile in Waverly, Va. through a company called Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE).
“(Five tons is) the size of (a) construction dumpster,” said Tamara Highsmith, VCU’s Dining Sales and Services manager.

What are other local schools and restaurants doing to compost?
