Early Review for EAT Oregon Hill

A neighbor had this to say about the new restaurant which has replaced Pescados China Street:

I just got back from dinner and drinks here. The change is very welcome! The food is cheaper and more diverse and the new menu is awesome. They have 2 excellent house-made sodas and house-made ice cream/sorbet. They have a drink named after each of the Oregon Hill streets, the Cherry St was most excellent. The brunch menus appears to be solid still, my friends who came to visit rave about the chicken and waffle at Pescados all the time, so I was happy to see that still there. I’d highly recommend it!

China Street Restaurant Going Through Changes

Richmond.com reports that Pescados China Street is closing, but then reopening as EAT Oregon Hill.

Excerpt from the article:

Pescados chef/owner Todd Manley announced Tuesday that Pescados China Street is closing and reopening next week at EAT Oregon Hill (note: this is Oregon Hill only; Midlo stays as-in).

According to Manley, the new menu and concept is all about him and his culinary team (Chef Trevor Knotts and Sous Chef Sean McGee) having fun and being creative.

“I colloborated with the staff as a whole to come up with this concept,” Manley said. [It’s] going to knock the socks off of a Richmond and be a true Richmond eatery.”

He said being a “niche seafood restaurant” just wasn’t working for the neighborhood; he wanted to be able to accommodate more guests at all price points and for any occasion.

“We want to be the Richmond eatery … we want to be distincly Richmond.”

Best of the Best

Congratulations to Mamma ‘Zu and Pescados China Street for their recognitions in the latest Style magazine for Best Italian Restaurant and Best Fresh Seafood Restaurant, respectively.
Combined with previous honors (and that includes 821 Cafe!), Oregon Hill is known as a dining destination.

It would be nice if the Hill had picked up other awards as well, but it is not always easy for the smaller neighborhoods to register in these reader polls. The only mention in the Richmond Times Dispatch’s recent Discover Richmond magazine was at the end under Dog Parks, where there was a snide remark about how “the old days of Oregon Hill mutts run amok have given way to a more courteous approach to sharing our spaces with four-footed friends”.

But hey, perhaps its just as well to leave the rest of Richmond to its self-accolades, and just go get a bite to eat, while being happy where you are at. Maybe I will grab a sandwich at Mojo’s, maybe I will share part of it with my dogs.

Pescados Art 180 Benefit Monday

I mentioned it before, but it was requested that I do it again:

Pescados China Street (that’s the Oregon Hill location) is showing a little love themselves and donating a percentage of sales to ART 180, a local non profit that provides after-school programs in creative expression to children living in challenging circumstances, giving them a voice through art! So grab a couple of coworkers or guy/gal pals for a lovely lunch, or take your honey or your best friend or your buddy to dinner. You’ll surely enjoy Pescados’ creative, seafood-oriented mix of Caribbean and Latin flavors, with fish that arrive daily. ART 180 will receive part of the proceeds from lunch, dinner, and even gift certificate or T-shirt purchases.

This Monday, stop by 626 China Street for lunch 11:30-2 or dinner 5-10 p.m. Visit their website to preview the menu, but make sure to check out the specials when you’re there.
For more information on ART 180, what they do and who they serve, or to donate personally, visit www.art180.org
