In recycling news, NERC’s MRF Values Survey Quarterly Report for the period January – March 2023 showed a slight downward trend in values, with a -2% change from the previous quarter for values without residuals1, and -2% change for values with residuals. This is the 16th report in NERC’s series of quarterly reports on the market value of commodities from MRFs in the Northeast. The report includes information from ten states: Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia.

In recycling news, last week a panel of scientists testified during a Senate meeting of the Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight. It was the first in a series of six meetings Sen. Jeff Merkley, D- Ore., said are necessary to get lawmakers on the same page about how to handle urgent plastic pollution issues affecting air, water and human health.

“The fossil fuel industry is envisioning a massive increase in the production of plastics, but that will only amplify the problems,” Merkley said. By the end of the hearings series, Merkley said, the committee hopes to have “strategies that we can take to a national level.”

A startup company’s plan to convert plastics into diesel fuel has so far failed to get off the ground in New Hampshire as skeptics continue to raise questions about the potential to create hazardous waste and air pollution.

And, according to a new report from the United Nations, bottled water is fueling famine around the world, something to keep in mind with local bottled water producers. It is estimated the industry produced around 600 billion plastic bottles and containers in 2021, which converts to some 25 million tons of plastic waste – most of it not recycled and destined for landfills.

In recycling news, local corporate neighbor WestRock held an earnings call last Wednesday which detailed it’s challenges and opportunities in the paper products and plastics industries. It’s investing a lot in plastics replacement projects- One example is a partnership with Molson Coors to replace plastic beer rings with a cardboard alternative meant to help the beverage company reduce more than 1.7 million pounds of plastic a year by 2025.

In recycling news (from WasteDive.com), “a final report from Virginia’s Waste Diversion & Recycling Task Force recommends the Commonwealth invest more time and resources into collecting accurate waste and recycling data while also pursuing recycling business growth opportunities and assessing possible policy changes.

Virginia’s legislature directed the state’s Department of Environmental Quality in 2020 to create the task force to examine how the state could improve recycling, waste diversion and source reduction. The group, made up of waste and recycling organizations, business groups, government agencies and other stakeholders, submitted the final report in late 2022.”
