Car Club Suspect Arrested and Charged with Assault on a Richmond Police Officer During Intentional Traffic Disruption on Lee Bridge Highway
Richmond Police officers have arrested a suspect involved in the car club disruption to traffic that occurred on the Lee Bridge Highway Friday night. Ryan Anderson, 18 of Virginia Beach, was arrested by RPD officers and faces numerous charges including assault of a law enforcement officer. The booking photo is attached.
At approximately 10:40 p.m. on Friday, February 3, officers were called to the 700 block of South Belvidere Street for the report of the south bound lanes of the Lee Bridge Highway being shut down by an illegal gathering of a car club. Hundreds of individuals and cars were engaged in dangerous, unlawful activity on the Lee Bridge. Officers arrived on scene to diffuse and disband the activity when Anderson struck an officer while operating his vehicle. The officer sustained a non-life threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital.
Officers recovered a stolen weapon from Anderson’s vehicle and charged him with the following:
· Assault On LEO 18.2-57 (F)
· Possession Of Stolen Firearm 18.2-108.1 (F)
· Concealed Firearm 18.2-308 (M)
· Blocking Roadway 46.2-818 (M)
· Dangling Objects On Mirror 46.2-1054 (T)

Environmental Justice March On Friday

The Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club and other environmental groups are sponsoring a protest and march this Friday.

From their event page:

Virginians from all across the state will unite in common cause to oppose unjust and unneeded fracked-gas pipelines anywhere in the Commonwealth, and to stand in solidarity for environmental justice and the climate.
On Friday, May 17, we will gather in Richmond at Canoe Run Park with members of the Union Hill Community, William Barber, III and Karenna Gore, march across the Lee Bridge and end at the Oregon Hill Overlook, for a rally.

11am: Meet at Canoe Run Park (600 W 22nd St, RVA 23225)
Noon: March across the Lee Bridge
1pm: Gather at Oregon Hill Overlook (end of S. Pine Street)

Damaging Historic Canal (Again)

Neighbors were horrified today to see this giant excavator actually sitting in the wetlands of the canal scrapping away at the bank of the historic James River and Kanawha Canal, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also listed as a federally protected wetlands. Sadly, this is certainly not the first time something like this has happened.

In 2011, the Richmond Times Dispatch reported that NewMarket Corporation destroyed a large section of the pre-Civil War Tredegar wall while preparing for a 2nd Street Connector, only obtaining the required permit after the fact. The neighborhood has tried to stay vigilant over the years. Yet in 2014, Venture Richmond destroyed a critical part of the canal.

It appears that this work may or may not be related to repairs on the Robert E. Lee Bridge. Residents are left questioning if more damage can be prevented in the future and what steps will be taken to repair the canal bank. But between the threatening demolition on W.Cary street, the disastrous ‘renovations’ in Monroe Park, and this new Canal situation, it is understandable that Oregon Hill residents and Richmond preservationists feel under siege.
