Pirate History

“Arriving at the gallows, which were at the north side of the State Penitentiary on the western outskirts of Richmond, a massive crowd estimated at 7,000 gathered on a nearby hill called “Oregon,” then ogled and strained to watch the hapless prisoners ascend the platform. A Priest and a Protestant Minister prayed with them through an interpreter. The three requested in Spanish that the people pray for their souls and their bodies be properly buried.
After the ropes around their necks were fastened to the heavy oak crossbeam, an officer pulled the cord that dropped the platform.
But things did not go as planned.”

So reads a portion of a new Medium piece by local writer Dale Brumfield, entitled “Frankenstein and the Three Spaniards”. Brumfield, a Throttle magazine alumnus, has a knack for finding juicy Virginia history- he wrote a book on Oregon Hill’s former neighbor, the Virginia State Penitentiary. He also has a new novel out called “Naked Savages”. While the pirate story has been written about before, Brumfield’s account adds the tantalizing detail that the executed pirates were reinterred in a single unmarked grave in Oregon Hill, where they have remained undisturbed. There’s more history to be uncovered

Another Shooting Increases Neighbors’ Concerns

While police and neighbors are still following up on a recent shoot-out at the Overlook, a drive-by shooting last night on the northern end of the neighborhood has renewed concerns.

A WTVR news report has a few details:

“Richmond Police and VCU Police received the report of a shooting at West Cary and North Laurel Streets,” the university sent students in a Monday morning alert. “Upon arrival, officers located a male that had been shot. Witnesses reported that a black four-door sedan had driven by and an occupant of that vehicle shot the victim. Police have increased patrols in the area.”

VCU confirmed the shooting victim was not a student. The victim’s wounds were considered non-life threatening, according to investigators.

Police provided a vague description of the suspect as a black male wearing a white shirt.

Richmond Police are leading the investigation.

Shooting At The Overlook

A little after 10 pm tonight, shooting broke out from a group of young men hanging out the Overlook condominiums at the end of South Laurel Street. It is unclear what exactly lead to the gunfire, but around 10 to 12 shots were fired. Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries, but at least one household reported bullets entering. The young men scattered and drove off in different vehicles.

After neighbors called 911, police arrived and gathered evidence.
