The weather, if a little damp (but only a little), will be mild and lovely. Therefore Byrd House Market will present a nearly full house today! Have you seen the Autumn colors, eh? Starting to turn beaootiful. Starting to fall a bit. I walked out my door this morning and the grass was sprinkled with brilliant yellow silver maple leaves. Always the first to drop in a breeze, no other leaves had even turned from green to any other shade, but those silver maples can’t to flutter and fly… I love autumn.

I’d like to remind you of Chocolate! Bars and cookies and tarts and hot drinks… But then I’d also like to remind you of the greens and root veggies and lettuces that are savory good, belly good and prepare the system for that 70% cacao rush! Simple, nutrient dense and heart warming soups and broils are soooo on the menu.

Did you see Steve???

Steve Haas Mushrooms made the big time daily paper’s Gardening section last week – just dude and his ‘shrooms. What a great article about a peculiar vocation! My favorite part of having Steve and Liz at the market, beside their grooviness, is that every time I ask about a new mushroom, how I should cook it, they both do the same thing. They look thoughtful for a nano second before saying, “Oh, I’d just slice it and saute it in butter” (I’m asking you, now, is there any better answer to a cooking question than butter???)

Oct. 19: Carnival!

Today:

Sister city delegates from Segou MALI visit market to chat with farmers about wind and solar-powered irrigation. Led by the mayor of Segou, Ousmane SIMAGA, the Segou directors procurement, energy, partnerships and sister city commission, and their version of the folk festival – Festival sur le Niger, the delegation is interested in agriculture, youth and sports (soccer, mostly), sanitation, urban lighting, early childhood and university level education, and of course, the festival. NOTE: our festival is on the James river, theirs is on the Niger river, hence the name — and “sur le” means “on the” – so there you go.)

St. Andrew’s Church canceled their Harvest Fair and so have lots of goodies for sale and so will be at the market this week and next.

This Tuesday At The Market

Greetings all
Well, we’re on weather watch, specifically the threat of damaging winds. As a result, the 3rd Tuesday Jam is canceled; Amy’s Garden and Wild Heaven Goat Soaps will not be present. We’ll try to keep you posted if others will also not attend. The Byrd House Information tent will be up, but we will not set up the cafe tables and umbrellas, and there will be no storytelling or face-painting. We’ll be streamlining operations to the essentials, just in case. So, like our stalwart vendors, our hardy shoppers will come to get their weekly good stuff, while keeping an eye on the weather.
Ok, voting for Richmond Unite is over and we don’t know our standing yet. In the meantime, the Amazing Raise begins Wednesday at 6 am and lasts through Thursday 6 pm. Donate to WBCH your little pocket out for 36 hours. Go to WBCH.org and click on the Amazing Raise link.

National Food Dayat the Market!!!
Byrd House Market celebrates National Food Day on Tuesday, October 23rd, 3:30-7pm. Eat Good Grow Great with 25+ food vendors. $10 and a Student ID gets you a Student Food Box! VCU’s Wellness Center, World Chiropractic, Robin Raver’s Chair Massage, Food Rescue activities and a Film+Discussion: “Ingredients” – Our partners are Shalom Farms and Victory Farm. Many thanks to Slow Food RVA for loaning us their copy of the film (and for being the Richmond coordinator of National Food Day!)

I talked a little bit about dog poop last week and things have improved. This week I get to talk about Parking! Geographically our market is bounded by S. Linden St. on its west (downhill) side and the gravel drive on its east (uphill) side. Turning left onto the gravel drive from Idlewood Ave, there are 3 or so spots that face the community garden fence. The tenants of the apartments along Cherry St. have the parking on the other side of the gravel drive and have recently let us know that they often come home to find their spots filled by shoppers or vendors off-loading. Legally, they have the right to have cars towed from their spots just as we have the same right if they park on market grounds or in our spots. But I would not like for any of us to take that path. So we thank you in advance and for the remainder of the season, for keeping to Idlewood Ave., S. Linden St., the soccer field, and the 3 spots facing the community garden fence. Thank you.

Early Review for EAT Oregon Hill

A neighbor had this to say about the new restaurant which has replaced Pescados China Street:

I just got back from dinner and drinks here. The change is very welcome! The food is cheaper and more diverse and the new menu is awesome. They have 2 excellent house-made sodas and house-made ice cream/sorbet. They have a drink named after each of the Oregon Hill streets, the Cherry St was most excellent. The brunch menus appears to be solid still, my friends who came to visit rave about the chicken and waffle at Pescados all the time, so I was happy to see that still there. I’d highly recommend it!

Shakambari Garden rejoins the market this week with organic bagged and loose teas, medicinal plants, a tea sample and a full noggin of ‘nowledge about the teas, their blends and origins, and their potential medicinal or health benefits. Sustenance has a conflict for the rest of the season so we bid them a final farewell (for the season) and welcome the family as shoppers and visitors. Caramont and Thinking of You Creations are off this week. But this glorious weather should ensure Chocolate Cravings is with us, don’t you think? Not too hot, not too cold – in fact a little crispiness to the air is a wonderous thing for produce, chocolate, breads and cookies, eggs and chutneys, viandes and sausages, fruits and flowers alike, eh, eh, eh?

The Grace Arents Library is undergoing a gradual and steady organizational and beautification overhaul. And its library manager would love to have the helping hands of those who love books, quiet and thoughtful tasks, sewing, old books and book restoration, and at least one or two who have real librarian training for some specific projects. I plan to schedule 2 clean-up days over the next month on Friday afternoon that will need 5-10 volunteers 4 hours on each occasion. After that, there will be ongoing need for those who’d like to spend 1-2 hours per week. Great for service learning and community service! China Street Restaurant Going Through Changes

Richmond.com reports that Pescados China Street is closing, but then reopening as EAT Oregon Hill.

Excerpt from the article:

Pescados chef/owner Todd Manley announced Tuesday that Pescados China Street is closing and reopening next week at EAT Oregon Hill (note: this is Oregon Hill only; Midlo stays as-in).

According to Manley, the new menu and concept is all about him and his culinary team (Chef Trevor Knotts and Sous Chef Sean McGee) having fun and being creative.

“I colloborated with the staff as a whole to come up with this concept,” Manley said. [It’s] going to knock the socks off of a Richmond and be a true Richmond eatery.”

He said being a “niche seafood restaurant” just wasn’t working for the neighborhood; he wanted to be able to accommodate more guests at all price points and for any occasion.

“We want to be the Richmond eatery … we want to be distincly Richmond.”
