Belle Island Moonshine

Richmond Bizsense.com has an interesting article on a new ‘craft distillery’ that is named after our beautiful island park, Belle Island.

An excerpt:

Production in Chicago, however, is only temporary. The team hopes to open a Richmond distillery in early 2014 and is close to signing a lease. They would not divulge an exact location but said they would like to set up their stills in Manchester.

“We want to have that river view, the city skyline – that’s where we want to be,” Wotring said.

The company’s founders would not disclose how much of an initial investment would be required to open the moonshine factory but said they recently brought private investors into the business. Marks, Wotring and Riggi plan to maintain their current businesses after launching their planned distillery.

About 30 area bars have picked up Belle Isle Moonshine, and 50 cases are set to ship this week to the ABC warehouse on Hermitage Road.

THIS Tuesday: Farewell to 2013 BHM; Hey There Renegade Market!

From email announcement:

A HUGE thank you
for a fantastic 2013 season at Byrd House Market, and to all our food producer/vendors for all the great work they do to bring you great food wherever you shop it.

In fact, VCU students let the vendors know their appreciation during National Food Day at the Market last week when they visited every one and gave them a Thank You card with a great graphic created from the words collected during a customer survey a few weeks earlier. College students have been swoopin’ in to take advantage of the $10 Student Box (a deal saving them anywhere from 20-30%) provided by participating vendors since first launched at Food Day 2012, but there’s been a real upsurge in their numbers this fall, so as manager, I want to thank them both – students and vendors for their mutual support.

As we head into the holiday season, great gift ideas abound at Byrd House Market… finely grown and crafted foods are always a welcome treat, as well as goodies for your pets and balms for body and soul. Fine goods at great prices! Not sure, ask me!

See you at Byrd House Market!

Launch of the Renegades

Byrd House Market Today, 3:30 – 7pm

From email announcement:

More spectacular weather
guarantees that Byrd House Market is a great place to spend the afternoon, or drop by! Pick up a late lunch, supper to go or a quick snack. Time to stock your fresh food pantry or the ingredients for that long anticipated fall stew, autumn roast, October saute? Ever thought about making a surprisingly easy herbed frittatta for the next brisk morning, or simple end-of-summer tossed salads with a warm dressing… How about the simple joy of crisp warm cinnamon toast from freshly baked bread served with with steamed fresh whole milk, or a peach smoothie made with fresh, pasteurized yogurt?

Is there anything better than good food?
No, but a good intern comes mighty close. Teresa Willoughby is working with BHM from September 2013 through June 2014 – interning with the Library Programs and Byrd House Market at WBCH through St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Grace on the Hill service program. She has a B.S. in Public Health with a particular passion for promoting community health through good nutrition, specifically local, seasonal, fresh foods. If you haven’t met her, she’s the girl taking market stats and learning quickly to be a great market assistant. Say hi and welcome!

Third: HURRAY for WBCH Byrd House Market and Byrd House Farmlet! The Whole Foods Market 5% Day was a great success – more than $5,700 raised for outreach, infrastructure and marketing for the farmlet and the market! This was especially groovy because the entire staff, executive director and board chair took shifts bagging groceries, handing out literature and sharing the great work of our agency and our nutrition education programs: the market, farmlet and community garden. What a payoff! Thanks to everyone who worked and shopped! Thanks to Whole Foods Market 5% Day and their 5th anniversary in Richmond!
