Byrd House Market IS a Family Affair!
“Rebecca Johnson (in photo above) picked out tomatoes while her children, Lulu, 7, and Hunter, 4, selected (and tasted) small sweet peppers at the Amy’s Garden stand at the Byrd House Market in Richmond recently. “It’s a cool place to bring them” rather than always going to the grocery store, Johnson said. ” But she didn’t exactly shy away from the cartons of small red and orange peppers. Enjoy the rest of the story here.

Byrd House Market in the Times Dispatch

Today’s Richmond Times Dispatch newspaper had an article about the Byrd House Market. Excerpt:

The here was the weekly Byrd House Market, a fresh-food bonanza sponsored every Tuesday, May through October, by the William Byrd Community House.
For decades, the nonprofit organization has provided educational, development and nutritional programs for kids in the city.
It has a library, runs after-school programs and summer camps, hosts dinners — often featuring food grown on site — and generally makes itself available to meet the needs of its community.
Since about 2007, the organization has run the farmers market on the yard that spreads out behind its building on Cherry Street.
About two dozen vendors set up each week, offering a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables, meat, flowers and prepared foods. Earlier in the season, some vendors also were selling locally grown plants.
In keeping with the Byrd mission of trying to uplift its community, the market was the first in the area to accept food stamps.
“We’ve always tried to promote better, healthier lifestyles, and this really fit into that,” said Peggy Friedenberg, who was chair of the Byrd board when the market started.
Friedenberg also said the market is a novelty among the many of its kind in the area: “We’re the only one on grass,” she said.
Hicks, who sets up as Amy’s Garden, said she has been coming six years now for one reason.
“Community,” she said. “There’s good support here.”
Ana Edwards, the manager of the Byrd House Market, looked around the small lot, tucked in along Idlewood Avenue between the Downtown Expressway and Hollywood Cemetery, and said the location was what made the market what it has become.

The True
We Open 3:30 (not 3)
There’s some confusion because of our policy to allow restaurants and chefs to shop at 3 pm, but vendors do need the time to complete their set-up, as does the Market Info tent with the credit/debit/snap machine. So please restrain your passion for our good foods until 3:30! Thank you.

Good Practice
Please Park on the Soccer Field
It’s on the street, along Idlewood Avenue, certainly, but there’s MUCH MORE parking available on the Soccer Field. The walk is short and partly shady. AND at the end of S. Linden St. there is an area designated for handicapped shoppers and quick pick-ups.
You can make this!

Rental Property Inspection Program Proposed For City

Excerpts from Richmond Times Dispatch article:

The city of Richmond is considering the creation an inspection program for rental properties in old areas of the city, a policy that could have a major impact on the 56 percent of city housing occupied by renters.
The rental inspections would apply in special districts created by the city with a high volume of renters and a risk of blight. As envisioned, the program would focus on student-heavy historic neighborhoods such as the Fan District, Oregon Hill, Jackson Ward and Carver, but the exact districts would be drawn later by city officials.

Landlords would likely have to pay a fee for each dwelling unit, but the precise dollar amount won’t be known until the city decides to move forward with an ordinance to start the program.
“This program will allow the city to work with property owners to make sure that that old housing is maintained at a higher level so that we don’t have additional blight coming through,” 5th District City Councilman Parker C. Agelasto said.

A survey conducted by the Virginia Municipal League last year found that 22 Virginia localities have rental inspection programs, including Petersburg, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Williamsburg, Lynchburg, Roanoke and Fredericksburg.
Agelasto explained the idea Tuesday at a meeting of the council’s Land Use, Housing and Transportation Committee. He characterized it as a way to protect renters from landlords who are reluctant to spend money to keep up their properties.
“The combination of old housing and young renters can sometimes be a recipe for disaster,” Agelasto said. Having working smoke alarms, he added, is important “when you live in a 100-year-old, wood-clapboard house.”

What you can pick up and make quick for supper tonight?
Snack on the cool fruits of summer – blueberries, blackberries, carrots, cucumbers, melons, cherry or sungold tomatoes – just rinse, chop and chomp.
Cool corn and sweet red pepper salad, garnished with dill, ground pepper.
Time for a homemade minestrone (filled with all the bounty of summer veggies) or chilled potato leek soup.
Tempest tossed salad of tender greens with cantaloupe chunks and sizzling sausage slices. Squeeze a little orange over it and and black pepper.
Never quite sure how to use herbs or spices (or both!?!). This site has great ideas and actual information…
