Byrd House Market Tomorrow?

The Nextdoor community website suggests that there will be a few vendors there this Tuesday

Tue, Jan 26, 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM
980 Idlewood Ave, Richmond, VA 23220
The market is continuing! Vendors are still allowed to use the same Byrd House space for awhile longer – stop by and see what’s for supper!

On Tuesdays, the Byrd House Market introduces our community to local farmers and vendors of the greater Richmond region: Fruits, vegetables, specialty crops and breads to handcrafted and health-oriented gifts.

The Byrd House Market aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere, where any and all visitors feel comfortable and enjoy the food and supplies purchased to sustain themselves.

Richmond Folk Festival/Richmond Zine Festival/Richmond Record Fair

Of course, for anyone who does not already know, this is the weekend of the Richmond Folk Festival. I am always surprised by how many locals still do not understand that this is not folk rock as in Bob Dylan, but folk musics and traditions of all types from all over the world. It’s an incredible chance to grow your musical tastes and it happens right next to Oregon Hill. Yes, there are community concerns about how Venture Richmond is using the Folk Festival to push inappropriate riverfront development, but that should not stop people from enjoying what the festival itself has to offer.

And that’s not all that’s happening this weekend…Whurk Magazine, ‘Virginia Cultural Review’, has a nice article on the Richmond Zine Festival, which takes place this Saturday at the Main Public Library, Oregon Hill’s City public library branch. (One footnote- although the festival is billed as the ninth annual one, Throttle Magazine started and sponsored a few earlier renditions of the Richmond Zine Festival years earlier)

If that is not enough, Oregon Hill’s Vinyl Conflict record store is co-sponsoring the Richmond Record Fair at Hardywood Brewery on Sunday. The description has “20+ tables spanning all genre, tones, culture, subgenre, sub-sub-genre, feedback, texture, vibrations and libations”. It includes a concert by local band The Milkstains.

Here’s hoping that everyone has a great weekend.

VCU Commonwealth Times On Hollywood Cemetery- Online

VCU Commonwealth Times newspaper has an article on Hollywood Cemetery’s increasing internet presence. Here is a few excerpts:

Hollywood Cemetery launched an online virtual tour in the beginning of August, with plans to incorporate even more content over the next 12 to 18 months. These additions will include increased tour options, content and connections to the cemetery genealogy database.

The online tour begins at the front gate and includes eight stops including the Iron Dog, Davis Circle and Mausoleum. Users can go through the online tour at their own pace. The virtual tour highlights the most popular of more than 60,000 cemetery sites, including former U.S. Presidents John Tyler and James Monroe. Each stop on the virtual tour provides pictures and a historical description. Users can also bookmark or favorite certain stops they want to explore more in person.

“It allows people all around the country to access the stories and beauty of the Hollywood cemetery from their home computers,” Allen said. “We believe it is important for the world to have access to these incredibly interesting stories even if they are unable to visit in person.

Swine Skins Set Up For Race

Local vendor Swine Skins has acquired a permit for setting up temporarily in a parking lot near the 800 block of Cary Street. Proprietor Marty is looking forward to being there for the next ten days, giving UCI Bicycle Race fans the chance to try his version of pork skin rinds, made with peanut oil. He has already been selling them at the Byrd House Market this summer and now he is ready for international exposure.
Nearby, as mentioned before, Cary Street restaurant Dinamo is working with local Ardent Craft Ales and international bicycle company Rapha to throw what is essentially a party during the upcoming UCI Bicycle Race.
