I did not discover the local band Flat Stanley until after they had already broken up, but I did enjoy their recorded music. This video has some great film footage of Richmond, including VCU and Monroe Park.

Flat Stanley was fantastic. They came out of lovely Chester, which in 1985 or so was the the end of the known world — no one knew what Chester was. Clay Farmer sang lead vocals, John Gotschalk was on guitar, Barry Roach played bass and Chris Farmer was the drummer. They must’ve finally broke up around 1990 or so. Chris went on to be the world’s best drummer — playing in bands like Mao Tse Helens, Sweat Family and perhaps his finest moment, the amazing math rock band Breadwinner. John also played in loads of bands afterward, including One Ring Zero, Red Hot Lava Men, Dynamic Truths and more.
Chris Farmer is still a musician here in RVA. He’s playing at Banditos July 10th.Great video for us to show our kids. Daddy had hair!
