This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which means trash and recycling pickup. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night. They do not belong on the sidewalk after tomorrow night.
In recycling news, Charlottesville City Schools launch recycling challenge. As reported by NBC29,
“the project is led by the city’s high school students and supported by local recycling and waste hauler, Republic Services in partnership with TFC Recycling.”
“It is a hands-on, inter-disciplinary initiative that encourages students to take a scientific approach to waste and recycling collection by analyzing current habits, assessing education and awareness, and utilizing project-based learning. The goal of the initiative is to dramatically increase single-stream recycling rates and composting while encouraging students to become better stewards of the environment. The Challenge will run through the school year with the goal to expand into the middle and elementary schools in the spring 2014.
As part of the program, students will conduct a waste audit to determine the current recycling rate of the city high school as well as the contamination levels of the recycling and composting streams. Once students have analyzed this data, they will develop a plan to increase theirschool’s recycling rate and efficiency through education of their peers.”
