Dorothy Jenkins, wife of Earl Jenkins (deceased Oregon Hill historian), died this past Thursday night. She and her husband were well known for their activism in defense of Oregon Hill and are regarded as real heroes for our neighborhood.
According to her obituary, the funeral ceremony will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where she was a longtime member. Interment Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 236 S. Laurel St., Richmond, Va. 23220.
The home of Dot and Earl Jenkins is one of the two only surviving houses on the west side of the 100 block of Cherry. They persuaded then Governor Dalton to prevent VCU from using the power of eminent domain to condemn their house. Ever since then Virginia universities have not been able to use eminent domain to acquire real estate. Dot and Earl were true heroes to Oregon Hill residents.
Tremendously nice people..Them and my Daddy would have conversations all the time(a lot the conversation had to do with how to stop the VCU juggernaut)…RIP
