Around 6:30 pm, a bicyclist was hit by a car at the intersection of Spring and S. Laurel Streets.

seriously, drivers need to watch out. I’ve almost been hit so many times since VCU students got back. And yes, i am totally within my rights to be in the street on my bike. In fact, its safer that way. And on that point new VCU students who ride bikes: STOP GOING THE WRONG WAY DOWN ONE WAY STREETS, ITS STILL HAZARDOUS ON A BIKE, STOP FLYING RIGHT THROUGH REDLIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS BECAUSE YOU ALMOST HIT ME ON MY BIKE WHEN I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY, AND QUIT RIDING ON THE SIDEWALKS AND ALMOST HITTING ME WHEN I AM WALKING. omg act like you’ve been somewhere new by yourself before.
Can we have an update on this please? Is the bicyclist okay?
Last I heard the cyclist only suffered minor injuries. It seemed the car ran the stop sign and the bike actually drove into the side of the car. Maybe the city will paint those white lines on the street to bring extra attention to the stop signs. Spring and Laurel and Spring and Pine are very accident prone intersections.
As for Nathan’s comment. I heard that the Richmond Police will be cracking down on bicycles relating to traffic infractions. Wrong way in one ways, red lights and the head-lights on the bikes at night.

i don’t think the police cracking down is necessarily the solution, especially since most of Richmond’s bike laws are outdated. Yes, wrong ways on one ways is dangerous, but in many other cities bikes are afforded different laws in regards to stop signs and stop lights. Basically, stop signs become yields and stop lights become stop signs for bikers. This is the way I ride, and I would be pretty peeved to get a ticket for it. It makes no sense for a cyclist to sit at a red light.
Another traffic hazzard is the group of skater dudes who like to perform in the middle of the 600 block of S. Laurel.
