Yes sir, the Smash-A-Q is happening this Saturday.
Come one, come all, this is a community event! Just because it’s hosted by a bicycle club doesn’t mean you have to ride one to come out and have fun!
This is a fundraiser so the more the merrier!
And the technical: We’ve given the heads up and received the OK from the Special Events department of RPD, as well as Special Events for Richmond City Government. And we’ve obtained a health permit for cooking!
I have not been calling the police but thanks for the info. I know some neighbors have some concerns, but I want you to know that I am personally pro-bicycle and pro-event overall.
Thanks for your support Scott. We just want to make sure everyone knows that this is neither intended to be, nor will be, an aggro-bicycle-drunkfest. We are hosting it as a fun and positive event (fundraiser) and have worked with the police and health department to ensure a smooth (and legal) event. We all hope to see many members of the O-Hill community out there and participating.
What are the funds that are raised to be used for?
A pedestrian-cyclist map of Richmond. We will have a jar for donations for the map at the event if you aren’t hungry or don’t want to participate.
all the profit we make at this event is going towards the production of a richmond cycling map.
Daniel sent this note, but I did not get a chance to post it here until now:
Good morning,
My name is Daniel Rockburn and I am part of the Saddle Sores Bicycle Club. As some of you may be aware, we are hosting a fundraiser tomorrow in the parking lot of Fine Foods. Admittedly, this email comes a day before the event, but I wanted to take a moment and explain the event in more detail for the entire Oregon Hill community.
The event is open to the entire community for participation. And we want to stress that the car smashing is not meant to, nor will it be advertised, as condoning any anti-motor vehicle sentiment. We came up with the idea based off of those High School fundraisers we all participated in.
We are trying to raise money to put toward a Cycling Map of Richmond, and to work with the City’s newly formed Commission on Pedestrians and Bicyclists.
We have spoken to and received an all-go from Sgt. Ward of Special Events for Richmond City Police, and also contacted the Special Events coordinator for Richmond City Government.Additionally, we have a Health Permit for the food we’ll be serving.
We will be occupying a small part of the Fine Foods parking lot. The car will be next to the dumpster, on top of a tarp, and we are committed to cleaning up the entire parking lot and surrounding space prior to leaving for the day, it’s just the right thing to do.
So please come and support your local business and the development of a pedestrian-bicyclist map!
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, as I am the coordinator for this event, and the POC on the Health Permit. Hope to see everyone there.
