    ## PRESS RELEASE ##

As part of a national tour, Eleni Vlachos will screen and discuss her new documentary, Seeing Through the Fence, in Richmond:

    When:
Wednesday September 2nd at 7:00 PM (one hour + Q&A with filmmaker).
    Where:
Room B41 (basement of library), Monroe Street Campus, Virginia Commonwealth University
    Cost:
FREE: Sponsored by Green Unity 4 VCU

    Synopsis:
Through a series of humorous and poignant interviews conducted across the US and in Greece with “random people,” the documentarian’s family, and activists, Seeing through the Fence explores the role of food in modern society and our connection, or lack of connection, with both the processes and animals from which our food originates. In addition to global concerns such as the environment and sustainability of modern agriculture, the film asks the question: ‘What prevents ethical principles from being advanced into action?’

    More:
“The film not only addresses the cruelty inherent in modern factory farms, but also how Americans can no longer sustainably afford to eat as they do today….” –Veronica Dristas, University of Pittsburgh, Global Studies

“Seeing Through the Fence accomplishes an impressive feat: It’s a documentary about animals, food and veganism that will not only appeal to omnivores, but actually is quite often funny. It’s not dour and earnest; it’s poignant and warm…” –Athens Banner-Herald (Athens, GA)

    Filmmaker’s Statement
I am a drummer, not a filmmaker. I shot this film on a hand-held mini-DV interviewing random people, my family in Greece and Seattle, and activists. I began this project five years ago to start a conversation. As a new activist, I saw the need to infuse humor into a topic that is often humorless: veganism. Lucikly, the Feminist Review reports,

“Seeing Through the Fence smartly peppers humor throughout…Vlachos serves up a vital and highly likable film.”

To my surprise, the documentary received very positive feedback from attendees of the sold-out world premiere in Durham, North Carolina. Accordingly, I left Durham to tour with both the film, and my band (Beloved Binge) for an entire year. The overwhelmingly positive responses have been from those who are not vegetarian:

“…Vlachos’ film is rather omnivore-friendly. Although nearly half of the people she interviews enjoy eating meat, Vlachos never comes off as being pushy or confrontational during their discussions.” –Joe Scott, Film Feature, Go Triad! (Greensboro, NC)

“I eat meat. Always have, probably always will. So, why would I want to watch a documentary about vegans and vegetarians? To see the different point of view that “Seeing Through the Fence” offers… In this humorous pro-vegan documentary, Vlachos allows others to speak their minds…” –LEO Weekly, Staff Picks (Louisville, KT)

“Thank you for hosting the screening of your film for the philosophy club at the University of Kansas! I think it is an excellent piece of work, both as an instance of filmmaking in general and as a means to engaging with a range of ethical issues. I should also say that the film had a significant effect on me (a non-vegan).” –Scott Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of Kansas, Lawrence
