Governor Kaine To Visit Byrd Market on Tuesday

Virginia’s Governor Tim Kaine will visit William Byrd Community House Byrd House Market and Grace Arents Community Garden on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. Gov. Kaine has a long history of supporting Early Childhood Education and accepted William Byrd’s invitation when he learned how the organization used its farmers’ market and community garden as teaching tools for its numerous children’s programs.

At the market and garden, the children from William Byrd’s Early Childhood, After School, and Career Readiness programs learn about nutrition, green jobs, and how our food system cycles from seed to plant to market to plate.

Executive Director, L. Robert Bolling expressed his enthusiasm for the event by saying, “We are delighted to have Governor Tim Kaine visit William Byrd Community House. It is very encouraging to know that the Governor recognizes our efforts to improve the lives of Richmond’s children and families.”

William Byrd Community House is a non-profit social services organization that has been serving Richmond families for over 85 years. For more information about WBCH and this story go to www.wbch.org or contact L. Robert Bolling at (804) 643-2717.

  1. “Maybe he can address our Idlewood traffic issues, since VCU and our Councilperson aren’t.”

What, are there no officials serving between your councilperson and the Governor?

  2. Governor Kaine was kind enough to accept the invitation but unfortunately the three local news outlets, Channel 6, 8 and 12 refused the invitation. I am extremely disappointed in the actions of the local news media. This was a fabulous opportunity for the news outlets to get the word out about the market and the good it provides for the community, especially the local children. If the news media had bothered to show up they would have found a vibrant scene and even learned that two of the vendors, Nana’s Homemades and Hot Stuff actually give 5% of their profits back to the Byrd House.

In such a trying time I wish the news media would report on something positive in the community. I think it is a true shame that this opportunity was placed in their lap and it was ignored. The news media had no problem reporting on vandalism that had taken place last year at the Byrd House’s gymnasium but no desire to report on something good in this community.

I cannot stress enough how disappointed I am with the local media and I hope they rectify the situation by reporting on the good that the William Byrd Community House Farmers Market does provide to our community.

  3. Sorry, Nell. Lame ducks fly pretty close to the ground around here… pretty much under the radar.
Im surprised channel 8 didnt stop by though. They seem to have the market covered on community issues.
