As many of the people that run this live in the neighborhood, I imagine most of this is caused by out-of-towners, but if you have a chance, go out and check out the festivities…it’s fun stuff!

I just wanted to warn everybody to be on the lookout for illegal activity in the neighborhood this weekend. Last year the neighborhood got tagged in numerous locations and trash was left everywhere. I’m all for having a good time as long as everybody keeps it legal, respects their neighbors and cleans up their mess.

  1. As expected Holly Street Playground is trashed with beer cans, beer bottles, cardboard boxes, malt liquor bottles, the works. It’s only the beginning of the weekend.

  2. Holly Street Park got a thorough scouring today! Thank you everyone for all of the help cleaning up and the fantastic weekend!! Keep supporting your favorite bike club and keep Richmond beautiful, fun, and positive! We love this city!

  3. I am disturbed by this lack of consideration. Thankfully a neighbor picked up the mess in Holly Street playground. I am also following up on getting more trash cans from the City’s Park and Rec Dept.

Looked fairly clean this evening in the rain.

I did see pieces of the bike ramp sitting in a tree well at Albemarle and Laurel.

I am all for celebrating pirate bike culture, and I saw a lot of Oregon Hill residents taking part, but yeah, would like to see more responsibility taken for trash situation.

  4. I’m willing to bet that as long as this thing goes on you will NEVER see more responsibility taken…only less. The nature of these things is a couple of responsible people set something up then all their drunk, good-timing, “I’m punk who cares?” friends attend and act the fool, leaving someone else to clean it up.

  5. i imagine that if anyone visited another park in the area that they would find similar piles of detrius sitting around. and, yes most of the damage and vandalism IS caused by out-of-towners. i know the cutthroats, who put the whole thing on, are just as concerned with keeping the mess and vandalism to a minimum. but to place the blame on them or the event is incredibly unfair, and more to the point, counterproductive. if anything, you should be excited! how often do you get to show off your amazing neighborhood to upwards of 1000 people? and, to address matt’s issue, the place in question is a PUBLIC PARK. with one trash can. where on earth are the 100+ people who came out to race on friday afternoon supposed to put their trash? i myself got there early and the trash can was already full. so, as far as taking responsibility, well, many of us tried our damndest. perhaps some responsibility lies in the park service’s hands.

this is OUR city, guys! lets have some fun in it!

  6. You’ve got to be joking right? I guess it’s too much to ask for anyone of 1,000 people to bring a few extra trashbags and clean up after themselves? What’s there to be excited about? It’s not like 1,000 of you were involved in organizing an anti-war rally or doing anything remotely constructive other than getting drunk. Take this from someone who loves bikes, and was reared in and involved in the punk community for over a decade, you guys are almost without exception a total embarrassment.

  7. if the people that organize this event, would commit to coming out at the end and cleaning up the park, then i would have less of a problem with this event. but, it falls to the neighborhood to clean up someone else’s mess.

also, i didn’t find it awesome to have a ton of people partying all night long in front of my house and trashing the sidewalk with beer cans.

  9. as a member of the cutthroats club i would like to say that we DO bring extra trash bags and we do clean up after ourselves. we leave trash bags for when we are not there. Holly street park is one of our favorite places for community events and we treasure it. However sometimes we hold bike events from 3-5 and at 5 we clean the ENTIRE park and leave. if people linger on at the park and litter it is not our fault. the bike club is not responsible for all the behavior at the park and it is irresponsible to think that it is. we promote the use of human powered vehicle. what is the difference if we were having an anti-war rally? isn’t the war about oil. so aren’t we promoting the positive rather than the negative? we work with parks and recreations and the police and are congratulated thanked and praised by local law enforcement, business’ and neighbors. no one wants trash and parties until 4 am in their streets, we do not condone this and if your neighbors are doing it, it should not reflect on the bike club, but rather your neighbor. find one member of the cutthroats and we would have it under control. Our events are not about drinking they are about bicycles so let’s stay focused and celebrate bikes and our little city.
